1998-99 Administrative Forum Series
MIT'S OMBUDS OFFICE: WHO? WHAT? WHY?___________ ---____ November 18, 1998
The AAC sponsored its first forum of the academic year on November 18 at the MIT Faculty Club. The event introduced the members of MIT's Ombuds Office to the administrative community. Mary Rowe has been at MIT as an Ombuds-person for 26 years, and recently Mary was joined by two new staff members.
Thomas Zgambo came to MIT from Polaroid, where he held a variety of technical and managerial positions before serving as Corporate Ombudsman for the past 3.5 years. Thomas also worked for Gillette. He is now working half-time as an ombuds-person and half-time as a conflict management trainer at MIT.
Toni Robinson works half-time as an MIT ombuds-person, and is also First Vice President for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Options Consulting, Inc. Previously, Toni was Deputy Ombudsman for the US Social Security Administration, and Manager for Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity for the Administration's Region Ten.
Mary, Thomas and Toni gave an overview of the types of problems that Ombuds-people are frequently approached with, and described the resources available through the Ombuds Office to Administrative Officers, personnel Administrators, Education Officers and others.
The AAC was pleased to have this opportunity to introduce Mary, Thomas and Toni to the administrative community.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF ADMINISTRATION AT MIT ____ --______--March 24, 1999
The AAC sponsored its Spring forum on March 24 at the MIT Faculty Club. The members of the Administrative Advisory Committee were pleased to host John R. Curry, MIT's Executive Vice President, and to hear John's reflections on the Institute and his strategy for moving forward.
Mr. Curry joined us on campus this past Fall, and comes to us from California where most recently, he served as Vice President for Business and Finance at Caltech. Prior to joining Caltech, John was the Administrative Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer at UCLA, and also served as Vice President for Budget and Planning at the University of Southern California.
Mr. Curry expressed his views on a variety of topics, and answered questions form members of the audience. The AAC was pleased to have this opportunity to introduce Mr. Curry to the administrative community.
LEADERSHIP IN A CHANGING WORLD ____ --____________--May 20,1999
The AAC sponsored its our annual "State of the Institute" forum in Little Kresge Auditorium. It was a pleasure to welcome aproximately 200 members of MIT's administrative community to the presentation "Leadership in a Changing World", and it was an honor to host the members of MIT's senior leadership at the event. President Charles Vest, Chancellor Lawrence Bacow, Provost Robert Brown and Executive Vice President John Curry participated as members of this distinguished panel.
Dr. Vest is MIT's fifteenth President. Prior to taking office in 1990, Dr. Vest was Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of Michigan, and was a member of the University of Michigan Mechanical Engineering faculty since 1968. Among the many prestigious appointments and honors he has received, Dr. Vest currently serves as a member of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, the Governor's Task Force on Economic Growth and Technology, and the National Research Council Board on Engineering Education.
Lawrence Bacow is the Lee and Geraldine Martin Professor of Environmental Studies, and has been a member of the MIT faculty since 1977. He served as Chair of the faculty from 1995 through 97, and has held a number of administrative positions at MIT. As Chancellor, Professor Bacow has oversight responsibility for graduate and undergraduate education, student life, student services, research policy, strategic planning, campus development, and the management of MIT's large scale institutional partnerships.
Robert Brown is the Warren K. Lewis Professor of Chemical Engineering, and joined the MIT faculty in 1979. He served as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1989 through 95, and was Dean of the School of Engineering from 1996 to 98. As Provost, he is responsible for the administration of the five schools and numerous research laboratories and centers at the Institute. He has responsibility for budgetary planning, and also oversees the operation of Lincoln Laboratory.
Mr. John Curry joined MIT this past Fall as the Institute's Executive Vice President. He previously served as Vice President for Business and Finance at Caltech, Administrative Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer at UCLA, and VP for Budget and Planning at the University of Southern California.
Each speaker presented his views on a variety of topics, and the AAC was pleased to host the event.
